Yaathra is a story of a forest officer who accidentally kills a policeman during an altercation and gets a jail term. The entire story happens during a journey back to his home and he narrates his love story to a bunch of strangers. The movie was directed by Balu Mahendra. It was originally made in Telugu as Nireekshana with Bhanu Chander and Archana in the lead.

Yaathra was one the successful movies in Mammooty’s career and he was paired with Shobana in the movie. He won the Special Jury award for Best Actor in the Malayalam State Film Awards. The story was inspired by “The Yellow Handkerchief”, a Japanese movie.

Balu Mahendra remade the movie in Tamil as Adhu Oru Kana Kaalam with Dhanush and Priyamani in the lead. The story was moved to an urban setup.

The original score has a heavy dosage of poignancy and melancholy. The latter part of the score depicts the police brutality and how the lead character encounters the same.
