This should have been a post “Onayum Aattukuttiyum”. For the uninitiated, Onayum Aatukutiyum is an upcoming Tamil Movie directed by Mysskin with Ilaiyaraaja doing the Background Score (or Foreground score according to the director). This is the first time after Kadamai Kanniyam Kattupaadu, Raaja is doing only the BGM. I thought I will celebrate some of the wonderful BGM scores from Raaja.
If Raaja wasn’t there, we would not have known what a BGM score would sound like or why we should have a BGM score for a movie. Hollywood or any other foreign language movies call BGM Scores as “Original Scores” – that’s how important it is to a movie. But in India, even the National Award recognised Original Score as a category only in 2009 – the first year it was awarded to Ilaiyaraaja for Pazhassi Raja. I would even say the Award has to be renamed as Ilaiyaraaja Award for Original Score – that’s how impactful his original scores are.
When someone gets in to an argument with me on why other music directors are “better” than Raaja? I just reply them, listen to Raaja’s Original Scores and you will know he is the best ever. So let’s celebrate Raaja’s Original Scores for this week
