Although Kalaignar TV has many tasteless programs and reality shows, they can be proud of Nalaya Iyakkunar that has opened up opportunities for indie directors in Tamil Cinema. Earlier this year, we saw wonderfully talented Balaji enthralling us with his Kadhalil Sodhappavdhu Eppadi and now Karthik Subbaraj has weaved magic with his Pizza. Karthik Subbaraj won the best movie award in Season 1 of Nalaya Iyakkunar.

Michael Karthikeyan (Vijay Sethupathi) is a pizza delivery boy and lives with his partner Anu (Remya Nambeesan). Michael encounters his boss Shanmugam’s (Naren) daughter Priya who is said to be possessed by a spirit. One day Michael gets a delivery order and Shanmugam asks him to deliver a box to his house too. After a few hours, Michael returns to the pizza shop shocked and says his wife Anu is nowhere to be seen. Has Michael encountered a spirit? What happened to Anu? – all these questions are answered in a 2 hour edge of the seat thriller.

This pizza is delicious and Karthik Subbaraj has baked it wonderfully well along with his sous chefs. A good thriller needs few things better than a normal movie and they have taken care of those important parts perfectly. Cinematography by Gopi Amarnath is brilliant while Leo John Paul has edited the movie perfectly. You don’t find any unwanted sequences except for the initial few minutes that’s needed to establish few things. Santhosh Narayanan in his second outing (after Attakathi) churns out a wonderful background score and that Ninaikiren song is eerie. But guys who surprised me was the sound designers – Vishnu and Sankar. They have done a commendable job in giving chills and thrills at the right places. One of the best that I have seen in recent times. Every actor has done their part well but Vijay Sethupathi carries his role with aplomb. If he chooses his movies right, this guys will go places

Kudos to Karthik Subbaraj for choosing a thriller as his debut movie and for the producers in having faith on him. Pizza is worthy debut for a director like him and he has become successful in scaring people after a long time. My seat was kicked thrice from behind and people shrieked at expected moments. Thanks Karthik for giving us this scary ride, we enjoyed it to the maximum. Looking forward for more from you

This delicious pizza gets a 4/5 from me and a must watch. Don’t worry, this movie will not go out of theatres even after deepavali releases. Guys, take her to this movie 🙂
