I was late to the quiz. I hated it as I never like to go to a quiz late. It’s all because of the invite which said 3.30. I was right in time for the wild card rounds ( there were 2 as there a lot of teams on same score). There was a team from Symbiosis Law School, Pune. They were allowed to participate from Chennai as they are going for official Geneva trip on Pune Round date.

Back from the Tata Crucible Chennai Edition and Chennai proved once again why it’s the toughest quizzing destination in India. The prelim was tricky as usual and it was touch and go for most of the teams.

2 teams missing out in Tata track and it was simply battle royale between two TCS teams ( Siddharth’s Tean and JK’s Team). If BILT was a cracker from Siddharth, Jyothi Laboratories from JK equalled it.. At last it has to end in a tie-break rightly so. Siddharth and Sri Hari will be representing the Tata track from chennai and tough luck JK

3 Teams missed out in Non-Tata Track including mine ( Thanks Aparna, we did a good job but not enough), Yaggyand Karthi (Infosys) and KalaiSelvam’s team ( ASAP Productions). Tough luck guys. The finalists are Venkatesh ( Aka Matti) and Shubam Roy ( Cognizant), Ramkumar Shankar and Deepesh ( Sanmar), team from Irevna Research, Sivaraman and Samit Kaul ( Cognizant), Vishwajeeth and Rohit Jain ( IBM), Kiran and Srinivas (Wipro).

Although Venkatesh was cursing himself for missing Cycle Agarbathis, they scored some crackers in the second round. I havent’s figured out till no how Ramkumar cracks these questions with spinning stories – Yahoo was wonderful. But they will definitely curse themselves for answering Portugese for the currency question and Venkatesh lapped it up because we asked the same question in our India Quiz, a year back. Of course, he was part of the research team. Vishwajeeth missed out on Nokia, which he should have cracked knowing his calibre. I think what separated the first team from the rest was the question they answered in the last round on Ronnie Screwala – although i cracked it from the audience, I would not have pressed the buzzer if i was in the stage. Guys, you thoroughly deserve the crown. The runner ups were decided on tie-breaks. Painfully, once again Ramkumar and Deepesh have to be with the runner-up crown. All the best for next year

It was a wonderful quiz altogether with Giri in his usual self and with some fantastic questions. That Amul poppet girl was certainly question of the day.  Hats of Venkatesh and Shubam for winning the quiz, bring back the crown to Chennai on October 4th.

One irking fact was  that the organisers should have thought about the demand of quizzing in Chennai. A whole lot of people had to stand and witness the whole quiz because of the lack of space. I dunno how they could even think of such a small hall for a quiz of that order in Chennai.  I think its because of the postponement. Taj Coromandel would have been better. We understand but Guys we fill up the Chinmaya Auditorium for every Tata Crucible quiz and of course what else you can expect from the Quizzing Capital of India….

Do you know John Adrian Shepherd, the guy who is credited for the invention of ATM born in Meghalaya? I just learned it on Saturday in Bustle 2009 – the annual corporate quiz organized by MOP Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai. I think it’s important that I should do the review for this quiz, because i am still remembered for the most infamous review of last year’s quiz. “Hey, you are the guy who wrote the review right, hell of a quiz man” was usual. Let’s forget it, because hats off MOP Organizing team, Lalitha Balakrishnan in particular for choosing Mitesh Agarwal to do the quiz this time. Yehi hai right choice ….

This was the second quiz of Mitesh’s I am attending, first was Hindu Business Line quiz. The difference shows when a quizzer turned quiz master doing the quiz in comparison to a non-quizzer. His simple, straight to the point without any nonsensical extra fittings is #awesomeness. The Prelim was little bit on the tougher side but at this level of Business Quizzing in the country, it is needed. The highest score was 25 (I think) and the cut off was 20 in 35 Question prelim. Most of the teams were hovering around 15-17 ( including us) and it was wonderful to see the 6 best teams on stage.Ramkumar (kabala) and Prashanth topped the prelim.

Now comes the most wonderful part of the quiz. The first part of the quiz was totally based on Indian Business and there were 35 questions – one question each for 28 States and 7 Union territories ( including National Capital Territory of Delhi) and mind you all the questions were based on the state. Usually in Business Quizzes, the quiz masters tend to international business houses if they want to make the quiz tough. Mitesh showed that the Indian Business have even more interesting things to say than the International Business houses. You deserve a standing ovation, Mitesh. It was fantabulous. There were 2 more rounds with combination of Indian and International businesses. All the rounds were in Buzzer.

The finals saw one of the greatest come backs you could see in Business Quiz, the famous team of JK and Gopal Kidao pulled of an wonderful comeback from being the last but one team to be the winners of the quiz. Wow, guys its a pleasure to watch you answering those questions.I just could not understand how they got the first two people to be killed by Industrial Robots and then said to myself, “Syl, you are seeing one of the best team in India”. Oh if you think that it was a comfortable win, it was definitely not the case. Rajen Prabhu ( Sumo) and Swami were in hunt till the last question of the quiz. They even took the guess for the last question and it was wonderful to see a sportive fight. Another team I should mention is the team all the way from Mumbai – Pradeep (Unilever) and Francis (Asian Paints) – they were in hunt for the title till the last round. It was a triple headed fight and the audience savored it. The other two teams were Vinod Ganesh & Anil (Irevna) and Yaggy & Karthik ( Infosys) and they did a good job as well. I think Yaggy is getting back to his best ;)

As a whole it was one of the best quizzes i attended in the recent past. I think the organisers from MOP understood the trick of the trade. Get the best quiz master, who can give you the best for the best quizzers in India. It’s easy to say but tough to do…they know it better I believe.  If my last year’s critical review for the same quiz done by Sumant.C.Raman, hurt anyone in the organising team, I apologise for it. I think there is no better way than giving you appreciation through this review….

And last but not the least, the Emcee for the day from MOP was so categorical in saying “after the most successful Bustle 2008″ -  We know how successful it was. Don’t worry, we got the joke ( ahem ahem)…Didn’t you guys?

MOP Bustle 2009 – Prelim

The early Tamil movies had a right mix of movies. There were masala action as there were socio-political movies, there were fairy tales as there were historical fictions. I think one of the most entertaining of all were the stories based on Hindu Gods and mythical characters. Don’t rate the yesteryear mythical classics with the new age graphical so called “Godly” movies. The way the modern movie directors showing Gods is something they should be ashamed of.

Thiruvilayadal (1965)

The first movie that comes to any one’s mind when thinking about mythical movies is Thiruvilayadal. Thiruvilayadal is an excerpt of 4 stories from the 64 stories, which tells the greatness of the Hindu God Shiva. Lord Shiva according to South Indian beliefs has two sons, Vinayagar ( Ganesh in North India) and Muruga (lesser known in the North with the name Karthik). Murugan fights with his parents as they give the divine fruit to the clever elder son and Murugan goes to the Palani Hills relinquishing all his virtues and luxuries. Different people try to convince him and atlast his mother Parvathy explains the various godly miracles of his father Lord Shiva.

The four episodes include the encounter with Nakkeeran, the poet in the Pandya Kingdom, the rift between Patvathi and Sivan – Parvathi being born as a fisher woman. The story of the over-proud singer and Sivan teaching him a lesson as a wood cutter.

Sivaji Ganesan, Savithri, Muthuraman, Nagesh, Manorama, TS Balaiah were few of the huge star cast it had. The music was composed by the legendary KV Mahadevan and the movie was directed by AP Nagarajan.

Why it’s so special?

I think this is the best mythical movie ever to be made in Tamil. I don’t think somebody could make a better one than this. Even AP Nagarajan tried to emulate it and never succeeded in the process.

The movie had everything to make it as the best myth movie. The grandeur, scintillating music, perfect portrayals of actors (right casting) and the choice of the episodes.

The dharumi character of Nagesh, his encounter with Sivaji Ganesan as Lord Shiva is arguably one of the best comic scenes to be made in Tamil Cinema. I never understood the fact of how all the mythical characters and historical characters suit Sivaji so well. He fits in to the role of Lord Siva lika a perfect T.

The most important reason for the success of the movie was the music. Pazham Neeyappa by KB Sundarambal, Oru Naal Pothuma by Balamurali Krishna, Isai Tamil nee Seitha Arut Sadanai and Paatum Naane by TM Soundarajan are fantastic renderings still ringing in the ears of music buffs. The flawless screen play by AP Nagarajan makes this movie a must watch.

Why it makes to the list?

1.Myth is the part and parcel of life in India. Movies are not an exception. I could not think a better movie than this to list in this genre.

2.Do I need one more reason?

1. The Dharumi character was not present in the movie originally. Nagesh was so very popular in those years that it was a crime not having in the movie. The director had to create a character to accomodate Nagesh in to the movie. It was said that the Dharumi character was based on a person called Krishnaswamy iyer.  It seems he was found in the banks of Mylapore Tank repenting about his poverty.

2. Krishnangoyal Venkatachalam Bhagavathar Mahadevan aka KV Mahadevan was born in Nagarcoil in 1917. He was working with HMV for few years and later turned towards music composing. His first movie was Avan Amaran and he was one of the most sought after music directors in his prime. His famous hits include Sankarabharanam, Konjum Salangai, Vasantha Maligai along with Thiruvilayadal. He had composed more than 600 movies in different Indian. A legendary music director. How can we forget Singaravelane Vaarai and Yaarukaga…

I never participated in Brand Equity so far because of the huge participation fee. This time I got a chance but I knew it would be tough to qualify for the finals in the quizzing capital of India ( it was high time Derek admitted the fact and he did so this time).

After a long waiting in the lawns of Green Park Hotel, we were ushered in for the prelims. It was after 7 years Derek was doing a prelim as his associate Andrew Scolt was sick. And it showed up in the way he did it. He literally rushed through the prelims. It would have been great if he had given some breathing space in between questions as the teams didn’t have time to do their second guesses.

30 question prelim was a combination of trivia, proper business questions, easy visuals ( we got all 5, I think most of them would have) and Derek’s usual multiple choices. The prelim was not tough but not easy too. It had the proper mix and some well framed questions.

The prelim was a high scoring affair with a top score of 24 and the lowest score of 12. The cut off was 20. The finalists are

The finals was surprisingly superb. No Cinthols and LIC questions. I think Derek’s team have done wonderful research except for the AV round of course. I was surprised to see Jimmy Wales photo and it got passed by 2 teams. Carrie Underwood came to the audience ( don’t ask me what was the question)

There were some wonderful dry questions like the Idli plate being in the standard micro wave oven kit for south India and Law firms question was awesome. Ram Kumar Answered with his usual calmness. That team were in ominous form and thoroughly deserved to win the quiz. But it went on to wire and it got to end with a wrong answer from JK..Hard luck guys. But well played. Citibank’s team of swamy &  rajen came second and JKs team came third ( there were 3 teams for the final 3 questions instead of usual 2 as two teams were tied for second place)

Derek was at his usual best with his wits and entertained the crowd to the fullest. It was worth the time spent. Word of caution – girls don’t go with your bosses and bosses don’t go with your female employees. Reason- ask your friends in Chennai who attended the quiz). Now for the prelim questions..

A relief on a Sunday with a nice quiz. A tough prelims, giving the Chennai Quizzers a wonderful exercise of minds. Even more tougher, nicely fought finals (both the tracks). Read the review on the Bustle 2008 Quiz. Just thought I would add my two bit here. First of all the aim for me and the Organizers (I check this with them each time) when I conduct a quiz is to ensure that everyone in the hall has a good time and has some knowledge to take back at the end of the quiz. The audience is therefore as important as the participants themselves. The questions are also designed to be at least 75-80% in the category that can be easily answered or would be of moderate difficulty with 20-25% being in the tough category to test the teams. For this quiz there were a fair number of questions that were not answered by the teams on stage and which came to the audience. Further to the comment that all the questions were lifted from various websites is completely incorrect. Yes,as in almost every Quiz across the Country some of the questions were taken from the web AFTER Verification of their authenticity and accuracy from multiple sources. In a Quiz with more than 85 questions asked the reviews speak of just one BSA-SLR Question where the accuracy is questioned-Very Clearly mentioned as in “BSA-SLR CYCLES” on stage as those who were there can attest. Better still you could ask the manufacturers of the bicycles themselves to be sure!!!
I am more than game to accept a fair review but the one put up by Rohit Nair in particular seems quite vicious and is unfortunate. I must thank Sylvain who at least acknowledged that the audience had a good time. It is difficult to please everyone and to each his own opinion. We go to an event with an expectation and if it is not met we are disappointed and so Sylvain’s review is perfectly understandable. I have been part of QFI for ages and ironically enough today my aim is to ensure that my quizzes reach everyone across all IQ levels and not just the QFI whiz kids. So I guess the reviews from the brilliant bunch are understandable after all. Maybe this quiz was just not tough enough to test them! Good Luck and All the Best!!!

Another Honest and True review of the Quiz from Rohit Nair. I was more diplomatic with the review and he is more open and critical ( or the blatant truth)…

I can summarize the whole quiz in a single sentence. What happens when you expect a Chandramukhi and go to the theatre, end up sitting in Kuselan? Thats what happened to lot of quizzers, who attended the Bustle ’08, the annual corporate quiz hosted by MOP Vaishnav College for Women, Chennai.

There was a huge participation for the quiz, although it had a entry fee ( Rs.1000) attached to it. The quiz master was the famed sports anchor of DD, Chennai – Dr.Sumanth C.Raman. The prelims actually started out like a typical Rajini movie with a good introduction ( the first question), with briliant interludes of questions on Symbian, 13th row and Gateway but fizzled out in the last.

After the prelims there were about 8 questions asked to break the tie between 5 Teams. I thought it would not end ever because the questions were damn easy and the teams were good. How about a * Questions concept next time. It works better.

The main picture was a dud. Run of the mill questions except for two questions ( believe me, you can find it in the list of questions below). I don’t think anybody will be so bad to miss LIC’s tag line.

There was a huge problem with the buzzers and I thought it would end up in literal brawl between few teams on stage. May be they could have done the quiz without the buzzers. But the audience had the most fun, commenting for each question, catching chocolates….

Only one comment stayed in my mind after the quiz made by a guy few rows before me when the quiz master said “This is a simple one, You should get it”,

“Tell me, which one was tough?”

I still found Madras Quiz 2006 was the best one (out of the three i attended) done by Avinash Mudaliar. A earnest request to the organisers for a more versatile quiz with varied topics next time.
