BIM Quest 2009 Review and My Personal Disaster

I think even Robert Clive would have become tired if he has to make so many attempts. I am in the corporate biz quizzing scene for the past 4 years. I was a decent biz Quizzer in college days and even won a few quizzes. But to be true, the reality hit me when I saw the corporate quizzing scene in Chennai.

Chennai would be the toughest place on earth to qualify in to the finals of a Biz Quiz. I am not exaggerating and all the quizzers will agree. I never made it to a single corporate quiz finals in these 4 years. May be I was bad, may be I didn’t put the right effort or may be it was not written ( Slumdog he he he). .. But I never gave up.

Back from the Tata Crucible Chennai Edition and Chennai proved once again why it’s the toughest quizzing destination in India. The prelim was tricky as usual and it was touch and go for most of the teams.

Thanks for your effort in posting the quiz. And reviewing it too.
Obviously done in a hurry I guess since there are many slips and factual errors in the post. I’d like to point out the most glaring ones.

Whom to believe??? Only Shruthi Hassan can confirm, I believe. But a google search on extramentals gives more results than extrementals.

And it’s a typo error with the name of S.R.Jangid and Lady Willingdon Girl’s School.

And about the versatility of the quiz, fellow quizzers can take the call. I still believe you can ask questions about other parts of Chennai.The boundaries of Chennai have expanded enormously in the past few years. I cannot provide you with any type of questions ( I believe its not right to give out like that) but I can definitely quote some of the questions asked by other quiz masters in few quizzes. I am sticking to only business related questions because I am more inclined to Business Quizzes.

I still found Madras Quiz 2006 was the best one (out of the three i attended) done by Avinash Mudaliar. A earnest request to the organisers for a more versatile quiz with varied topics next time. Chennai has evolved alot. Chennai is not Mylapore and a few other areas around it. The boundaries have evolved and people have changed alot. Like to see a better quiz next time.

TATA CRUCIBLE 2007- Chennai Round-Review, Prelims and Finals

Wow Whatta Quiz, that’s the feeling I got after attending the Tata Crucible Chennai round. I should say Giri has come back with a bang. A extremely tough prelims and I was very happy to get Aspirin correct in the prelims…

And ofcourse our Chennai quizzers proved that they are good in getting the tougher ones right… The cut off was 15 and the top score was 19 by Irevna ( Vinod’s Team)

The quiz proved to be a giant killer with most of the top teams out of contention ( or I think they have planned to contest from some other centre)..There were 4 new teams on stage and it was a hard fought quiz.

Giri at his personal best with wonderful questions like the Dabba wallahs and the Advertisements of Free Ads.. The video ads proved to be tough for the teams on stage but not for the audience.

The Tata Track was won by the TCS team and one could see lot of prelims answers sneaked in as questions in the finals too.. This time Giri had lot of Chennai based questions from Saravana Sttores to Narasus Coffee…and ofcourse the video ad of Titan Sonata ( I dunno where they got it from)

The most heartwarming moment of the day was the prize distribution by Hemu of Landamark. A wonderful lady who gave us the Landmark quiz and gave a pleasing news that this year’s Landmark will be done Dr.Navin Jeyakumar…

We can be sure that we don’t questions like how many tar roads in India and which vegetable can be cut from the top and discarded from bottom… We can escape from Headaches..

And at last I could see Giri taking a dig against his rival twice in the whole quiz…But of course that’s the blatant truth…

Hats off to Giri and his research team, a worth spent Saturday Evening for all the Chennai Quizzers.

                                      Derek was always a show master. The most entertaining,sometimes crude when it comes to humor. But when it come to quiz, i believe he is good only for Bournvita Quiz Contest.

                                    He was better than last time when it came to content. Last time the final question which decided the first prize was “Official Airliner of the Indian PM”. This time he was not so bad but he had some uneven questions at times…

                                    When he came up with the History of UB group related to Chennai’s Armenien Street, I was awed and just gasped “marvellous”, the next question he came up was about LIC ( High rise building). I thought “Oh my god, how can he ask such a easy one”. The next one was awesome “Name the coffee shop in Courtyard Marriott” ( I found it in the drape which they had inside the auditorium and one team answered it right). The excitement bubble was shortlived. Hyderabad participants, please check  the restaurants in your Hospitality sponsor

                                    Derek, there are lot more things to ask about our wonderful Chennai… All the things said and done, he was wonderful when it came to some questions like Kwaja Abdul Hameed, MS Swaminathan and Axe Effect ad.. Ofcourse the usual satires he did with the introduction of rounds…

                                    It would be great if his team does some more research and avoid questions like synthetic phenol – cinthol.

                                    Liba ExQuizite Review

                                    Liba Exquizite has proved to be a tough quiz all over the years. For the Past three years i have been participating in the prelims and witnessing the finals (As you know its very difficult to get on stage with the quality of the teams participating).

                                    This year was no different, a whole set of wonderful questions and impeccable answers, Exquizite was a wonderful treat. One team cracking Kappa on the first clue and another team cracking Ajinomoto with a logo..awesome quizzing all throughout the finals.

                                    A tough prelims and after 6 gruelling rounds of quiz, two best teams were on a tie. The young team from Infosys (Quiz Quiz Bang Bang) tied for the first place with Rohan & Amit.

                                    Pickbrain had three tie-break questions for them. The first question was about Dun & Bradstreet which was cracked by Infosys team and the second question was about Cubicle Millionaires which was cracked by Amit’s team. With two teams tied with 1 point, the last question read like this

                                    “Ten secrets of World’s greatest brand builder” is the sub-title to a famous autobiography of which flamboyant businessman?

                                    Amit’s team had Donald Trump as the answer and Infosys team had Richard Branson. The answer according to Giri was Richard Branson and his book “Losing my Viriginity” which eventually made the young infosys team to win the Quiz. They bagged cash prize of 40k.

                                    I felt a small discrepancy in this particular question and i want to bring to the notice of the fellow quizzers. Richard Branson’s “Losing my virginity” has the following sub-title “How i Survived,had fun, and made a fortune doing business My way”. The book Giri was speaking about is also about Richard Branson but its not a autobiography but a biography by Des Dearlove by the Name Business the Richard Branson Way which has the sub title “10 secrets of the world’s greatest brand builder”. (see the attachments for the front covers of both books)

                                    All though the answer for the question is right, there was a small mistake in the question which would have confused the other team.
                                    This is the first time i am seeing Pickbrain doing a mistake and as he is one of my favorite quizmasters, i felt that i should bring this to his notice.

                                    One hell of a quiz with some wonderful answers – LIBA Exquizite 2007.

                                    I sent the same mail to Pickbrain and Team Greycaps….They have replied as follows

                                    Dear Sylvian

                                    We spoke to Mr.Giri on this on receipt of your mail.

                                    He says he did not say “Loosing my virginity” as part of the answer to the question asked in the tie breaker but much later drew a parralel during the prize distribution while refering to a “young” team winning their ‘first’ major corp quiz and hence ‘loosing my virginity’ in a branson context
