Shame on you Indian News Channels – Ilayaraja Fiasco
The news channels of India have become like the tabloids of western world. They report populism and not news. We have seen them creating opinions on the issues they want to but now they have started deliberately leaving out the news which will not give eyeballs for them.
The 57th national awards were announced yesterday by the National Awards Committee. The Best Music Direction was awarded in two categories for two music directors. Amit Trivedi for his radically different Dev D songs and for Maestro Ilayaraja for his background score in Pazhassiraja. This was the first time a separate category in National awards has been instituted for Background score. The National Awards Commitee have clearly specified that both the music directors are credited with Best Music Direction award this year. Both will recieve a Rajat Kamal and 50,000 Rs cash. The last time Music Direction award was shared in 1995 by 3 people of which one was the late Mahesh, for his wonderful background score in Nammavar. The Indian news channels categorically omitted the name of Ilayaraja in web and Tv. NDTV atleast had the courtesy to have a oneliner in their web news whereas CNN IBN, Headlines Today and Times Now happily reported Amit Trivedi as the sole recipient of the Best Music Director and didn’t even bother to mention the other category.
There can be only two reasons either the news channels are ignorant of the fact that Ilayaraja also got the award or they purposefully wanted to omit his name. Either way, shame on the news channels. We are not asking the news channels to report which is not true, why cant they report something that is true? Is background score which is the soul of the movie not important? How did it become a lesser achievement than doing music for songs? An oscar given to the original score is respected more than the oscar given to a song.
Do the news channels know there are only two music directors who have won 4 national awards? One is Ilayaraja and another is AR Rahman. It doesnt even matter for Maestro Ilayaraja as he has gone past awards and ceremonies. He lives music. But it hurts ardent fans like me, who worship his music. I dunno what on earth stops these news channels from giving a credit to a person who has earned it by his talent.

this is not the first time. Indian English channels always consider South India as a Different nation.
Even the child artists of Pasanga were not mentioned – if it was Darsheel Safary it would have been a big news for them. I hate the biased reporting. Lets see what happens for Endhiran and Robot
The same thing will happen to Endhiran in Hindi. There will be a big hype initially and then we can expect trash comments.
North Indian media (and people in general) has pre-conceived notions about South Indians and their movies, which has not changed much over the years.

The quality of Indian TV & web media is deteriorating day by day. I stopped watching these news channels some time ago. Don't trust the authenticity of their news much.
Ilaiyaraja is above all of these. He is a legend (with or without the reporting)

Also, it appeared as if 3 Idiots won all the awards and a huuge big deal was made out of Amitabh Bachchan winning the Best actor award. It was almost as if there were no other awards. Kutty Srank, which won five awards including best picture, which was hardly mentioned. And the fiasco omitting the Maestro from all reports was unpardonable. As Micheal Jackson has said, Bloody Tabloid Junkies! #Fail.
btw..it was johnson who was awarded a national award for his background score in sukrutham..And that was the first time the jury gave award on BGM..I hope they continue this since bgm is more related with film than songs.None of the award jury here give enough respect for bg score.
